MDCHS Announces New AD, Director of Student Services, and Football Coach

Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School is excited to announce the arrival of Wynter Kelly as the new Athletic Director for the 2015-2016 academic year. Principal Patrick Yuran stated, “Mrs. Kelly set herself apart from all other candidates with her extensive leadership experience in a Catholic school environment, commitment to excellence, and true understanding of the role of athletics as a part of the greater mission of a Catholic school.” Mrs. Kelly states, “I am thrilled to join the Donovan staff and look forward to sharing my professional experiences with the holistic approach to education. The true value of Catholic education transcends the classroom and extends into the athletic arena.”

Wynter Kelly Mrs. Kelly’s true life-long passion is athletics and she feels that the role of an Athletic Director is crucial to the leadership of any school. Mrs. Kelly understands the true value of athletics as an extension of traditional classroom instruction. For her master’s thesis, titled Strengthening Gospel Values in Athletics, Mrs. Kelly explored students’ perceptions of athletics with regard to promoting Christian values, strengthening their faith, and deepening their understanding of social justice issues in order to determine tangible ways to improve the student experience. Mrs. Kelly stated, “I believe strongly that athletics have the opportunity and the obligation to play a critical role in Catholic education and promote the mission of the Church. High school athletic programs are the perfect venue to model and teach Christian values, and it should be the priority of a Catholic school to harness this potential to ensure the full development of every student-athlete.”

Mrs. Kelly holds a Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership from the University of Notre Dame and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of West Georgia. In addition, she has taken advanced classes at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Lasallian Leadership Institute. Since 2003, Mrs. Kelly has served several roles at the legendary La Salle Academy in Providence, RI, a Catholic High School with over 1400 students.  Since 2009, she has served as a class moderator and Dean of Students while coaching both basketball and lacrosse. Mr. Yuran further noted, “In addition to hiring a top quality administrator and mentor for the students, Donovan is getting an amazing science teacher.”  Ms. Kelly’s teaching experience includes anatomy, biology, chemistry, and biotechnology. Mrs. Kelly and her husband, Martin, have been members of St. Martha Catholic Church in Rhode Island for 7 years and are the proud parents of five children.

In addition to the arrival of Mrs. Kelly, Donovan is also thrilled to announce the selection of Mr. Jason Miller as the Director of Student Services and Mr. Evan Cooper as the Head Football Coach. The  Director of Student Services is a new position designed to oversee and assist in the coordination of the many facets of student life including retreats/service, student activities, clubs, athletics, and discipline.  Student Life is an essential component to the holistic approach that comes with Catholic education.  As the Director of Student Services, Mr. Miller will assist in the development of students by mentoring, leading, and guiding them in all areas of student life. Mr. Evan Cooper, Head Football Coach, is committed to building a football community centered around student mentorship and utilizing the sport and a means to developing young men of faith and integrity.  Mr. Miller and Coach Cooper are mission-based, servant leaders dedicated to mentoring high school students in a Catholic environment. Principal, Patrick Yuran stated, “As a community, we could not be more blessed to have these two individuals join our staff. Each one possesses a wealth of skills and talents that will provide our students with life-changing experiences.”

Jason MillerMr. Jason Miller, Director of Student Services, holds a Master’s of Science in Curriculum Instruction, a Bachelor’s of Science in History and Sociology, and an Associate’s Degree in Teacher Education. Throughout his 18 year career, Mr. Miller has served as a high school Principal, Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, and high/middle school Teacher. His coaching experience includes baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Mr. Miller joined Donovan in the fall of 2014 as a social studies teacher and states, “I am extremely excited to be at Donovan and to have this new opportunity as the Director of Student Services. I look forward to building lasting relationships with our students, parents, and community.” Mr. Miller and his wife, Joy, are members of St. Anna Catholic Church in Monroe and the proud parents of 3 children.

Evan CooperMr. Evan Cooper, Head Football Coach, comes to Donovan with more than twenty years of teaching and coaching experience. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree and played football for the great Bo Schembechler. He credits coach Schembechler with serving as a mentor, life coach, and father-figure during his time at Michigan stating, “…he taught me how to be a man. I am the man I am today because of coach Schembechler.” Upon graduating from the University of Michigan, Coach Cooper had the good fortune of playing in the NFL for eight years – both with the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia Eagles. Upon retirement from the NFL, Coach Cooper made teaching and coaching youth his life’s mission. He has taught and coached in both public and private schools and looks forward to joining the Donovan staff. Coach Cooper states, “I am extremely excited about this new opportunity and look forward to mentoring the Donovan students in the classroom and on the field. Let’s Go RAMS!” Coach Cooper and his wife, Shawnyielle, are the proud parents of four children.
