English I : Literature and Composition

This course is a balance of literature, composition, vocabulary, and grammar presented in a survey of the major genres of fiction (the short story and novel), nonfiction (the essay and autobiography), drama, poetry, and mythology. Speaking, listening, note-taking, and research skills are included with an emphasis on the development of study skills. This course encourages the development of reading skills, critical thinking, and an introduction to literary analysis.
English II : World Literature

This course provides a wide variety of readings in world literature. All of the major genres are covered, but more emphasis is placed on the novel. More intense research is required and students learn to formally document their research. This course reinforces and continues to develop writing skills, expands vocabulary, improves grammar and usage, and inspires the student to incorporate critical thinking and analytical skills used for literature in class into his or her daily life.
English IIH : Honors World Literature

This course provides a wide variety of readings in world literature. All of the major genres are covered, but more of an emphasis is placed on the novel. More intense research is required and students learn to formally document their research. This course reinforces and continues to develop writing skills, expands vocabulary, improves grammar and usage, and inspires the student to incorporate critical thinking and analytical skills used for literature in class into his or her daily life. The honors course moves much more rapidly, while exploring greater content in more depth. The course also requires more research and more projects than the World Literature course requires.

This course is a survey of American literature studied chronologically emphasizing reading, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. Students write expository papers on literary and general topics and creative writing.
English IIIH / Honors American Literature

This course is a survey of American literature drawn from various traditions. Themes and major writers are analyzed in depth with extensive expository writing on literary and general topics. Creative writing, analysis of literary criticism, vocabulary development, advanced research skills, and test-taking strategies will also be included in the course. The course will culminate with a formal research paper.
AP English Language and Composition

By the end of this introductory-level college composition course, students will become keen readers and writers in multiple genres. Reading and analyzing a broad and challenging range of mostly nonfiction prose selections, students will identify and explain authors’ use of rhetorical strategies and techniques to present myriad and complex arguments. But more than readers of texts, of rhetorical strategies, and of authors’ opinions, students will become readers of culture, society, and themselves; they will become sensitive to semiotics and to the way in which arguments are communicated not only verbally, but visually, orally, and graphically. To express their ever-deepening understanding of rhetorical strategies and argument, students will employ numerous and varied writing techniques.
English IV : British Literature / College Writing

This course combines major works of English literature with a development of more mature writing skills. Writing includes techniques of exposition, argumentation, and literary criticism with attention to mechanics and usage. Outside novels and plays and vocabulary study are part of the curriculum.
AP English Literature and Composition

This course has been designed for students who have acquired skill in analyzing literature and who have demonstrated proficiency in writing and wish to attempt to receive college credit through the AP exam. The course includes a study of major British writers, outside novels, plays, critical writing, research, creative writing, and a major research paper.
